A State College-based biotechnology company is seeking a part-time Controller/Accountant who will work to build, systematize, and maintain all aspects of the company's general accounting, financial reporting, and internal operations processes. This position does have a possibility of growing into a forty (40) hour week and will gain exposure to all business operations as a result. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in accounting principles, internal controls and business operations, and able to work comfortably with numbers and people.

The client is a global leader of nuclear receptor (NR) assay kits and related screening services. Its customers include the leading US pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical, and nutraceutical companies, who are increasingly selecting the client's products and services to improve the speed, accuracy, ease and cost-efficiency of their drug discovery research. In addition to NR products, the client is expanding its technology platform to include gene expression and in vitro toxicology capabilities.

The Essential Functions of the position are:

  • Oversee general accounting operations by controlling and verifying company financial transactions
  • Billing, receivables, and cash application
  • Accounts payable processing and vendor management
  • Reconciliation of account balances and bank statements
  • Internal financial reporting, budgeting, and analysis
  • Assist with external financial reporting and coordinating with external auditors and accountants
  • Internal control design, implementation, documentation, and enforcement
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP
  • Other duties as assigned by leadership staff
  • Develop and implement processes that support continuous improvement and strong business results

Hours: Part-Time, with potential to become Full-Time

The Qualifications are:

  • Must be willing to touch all pieces of the financials including integration of operations into finance
  • A Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business with emphasis in accounting, is required
  • Must be highly skilled in use of Excel Spreadsheets
  • Must be familiar with Sage (PeachTree Accounting software)
  • Must have very good written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have excellent work habits, including a willingness to work the hours necessary to get the job done, especially when important deadlines cause greater than normal departmental pressures
  • Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process
